The story revolves around key characters who play pivotal roles in the looming war. Cyran Orendain, a dragonsquire hailing from Nevergrace, must quickly adapt and confront the challenges ahead. Meanwhile, Sirra Brackenglave, the formidable Dragon Queen of Murgare, is a skilled dragonmage and Dragonguard who commands her monstrous shadow dragon with finesse. Jaslin Orendain, Cyran's sister, unexpectedly finds herself thrust into a position of great responsibility following an attack on Nevergrace.

One character who adds a layer of complexity to the narrative is Pravon, known as the Dragon Thief. Not motivated solely by profit, Pravon steals dragons for the sheer thrill of the act, adding an element of unpredictability to the already tense political landscape.
